Hurricane Preparedness
The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st and runs until November 30th. September is the most common month for hurricanes to make landfall, with August following close behind. It’s important for property owners to be prepared and take steps to protect their home.
Important Information
Before the Hurricane arrives:
- For Storm Panel Hurricane Shutters, make a map of where each shutter will go on your home. Practice hanging and taking down your shutters.
- If you need help to hang your shutters, make sure you arrange for it ahead of time.
- Hang or close your shutters early, so you’re not trying to do it during high winds.
- For Accordion Shutters with locking handles, make sure you have the keys readily available as they Must Be Locked During a Hurricane.
Prior to hurricane season:
- Trim trees and shrubs away from windows and doors. This will make it easier to access your shutters and prevent and prevent them from banging into your shutters and possibly causing damage during the high winds of a hurricane.
- Check and replace all hardware and make sure it’s in working order. Arrange for maintenance/repairs as needed.
- If you have an aluminum porch/patio roof: clean your gutters periodically, and check for leaks—especially if there are overhanging trees or shrubs.
- Cut back any trees to reduce the accumulation of debris in your gutters and reduce the risk of damage from branches.
